Making Something of Yourself

Bland, boring and unambitious Alexander Bartlett is 30, and staring at the wreckage of his life: all the things he'd promised he'd do by the age of 30 are still undone. He's drinking away his problems at a local bar when a strange woman approaches him and offers him the rare opportunity to go back and do it all over again. He agrees, and she sends him hurtling back through time to a moment in his childhood when he was only 9 years old ...

...and discovered that the woman never mentioned that Alexander would be living his life over again as a girl.

From that moment onward, Alexandra has to grow up female. School uniforms. Makeup. Puberty. She has to watch all her former friends, still boys, grow up without her in public school, while she goes to an all-girls' academy. As the years go by, Allie struggles to remember who she is, and to decipher the mysterious woman's final command to her: make something of yourself ...

Note 1: the game is designed to have a long beginning during which the main character attends school, makes friends, chooses areas of study, and gains stats. If you are writing a review to complain that "the game is too linear," bear in mind that this is the beginning of an incomplete project, and the linearity of this stage is by design. See "Known Issues" on the changelog.

Note 2: the author is open to permitting some customization of the pop culture references (eg, of news events, films, singers, songs) to match events of the past to your region, such as Australia or the UK, provided that a) you do the research for the data tables and b) you assume responsibility for any objections by others in your region. This offer to assist with customization may or may not extend to other features, depending how extensive they are to modify. For instance, changing the name of Alexandra's youth organization is easy; changing the months and season of the school year is harder. See page 2 of the discussion thread for more.

Known Issues

  • Not all of the images in the downloaded folder are available in-game.
  • Toward the end of the game you can accumulate unspent points, but they do not (yet) turn into stat increases.
  • So far, you are still only accumulating stats, you are not (yet) using them for skill checks. However, there are stat-based path branches now: your available options may be constrained by previous choices. The item you choose for your Christmas present, and the kind of activity you choose for your birthday, are limited by your previous choices. For instance, if your previous choices mark Allie as an athlete, you can't choose activities that would raise INT or CHA above STR. Allie's body type, once set, is fixed. (This is partly to limit the game's art requirements; this way I don't have to draw 3 versions of every avatar with every breast size.)

Version 0.15 (beginning of freshman year)

  • Restored left-float and right-float style sheets to wrap around images.
  • New content added. You may drop hints about the spring dance; you may speak with Curt; and you may go to the dance (if invited, and if you accept).
  • If you attend the dance you have the opportunity to respond, indicating whether you had a good time. This response can lower your resistance to being a girl (by a little, or by a lot). If you previously chose "promise to be a girl" there will be only one response.
  • The 8th-grade interlude following the dance has been added. The breast growth routine from earlier in 7th grade has been moved to this scene.
  • First introductory passage of high school has been added with another stat bump for aging.
  • High school avatar becomes visible when you reach your freshman year intro.

Version 0.13e

  • Bug fix: it should now be impossible to accidentally cross into the (unfinished) Lesbian Allie sections.
  • Additional content added: your birthday party; you join a youth group and select your area of study.
  • The breast expansion scene prior to meeting Curt has been postponed; it will now take place later in the game.
  • Rating has been adjusted from G to PG (no nude images and no sex, but some bad language; girls kissing).

Version 0.13d

  • Allie should now correctly be age 13 in the 7th grade.
  • There should now be summer-in-summary content for the year 1972.
  • There should now be appropriate hot celebrities for the years 1973 and 1974.

Version 0.13c

  • We are about halfway through the 7th grade content.
  • Additional content added: you may drop hints about the upcoming dance, befriend an outcast, and speak with your (former) friend Curt.
  • Next breast growth stage added.
  • Toward the end of the existing content, your choice of Christmas gift may be constrained by your body type. It is possible in some cases that one option does not appear.

Version 0.13b

  • There is now alternate text for some scenes if Allie promised to be a girl. This gives a slightly different flavor and reduces emphasis on wanting to be a boy again. New text found in the diary-writing scene, the bra-buying scene, the volleyball locker room scene, and possibly others.
  • Additional content has been added beyond the selection of Allie's Christmas gifts. Although this does not consist of a lot of additional passages per se, the passages that were added have a lot of variation in them, so they took a while to write.
  • Changes to the style sheet for readability.

Version 0.13a

  • Changing CSS elements (such as font size) to hopefully adjust better to different screen resolutions.

Version 0.13

  • Game ends when Allie is asked to decide what she wants for Christmas.
  • The database entry for this game indicates no adult themes. This is based on what is currently implemented in the game.
  • The game will be G-rated throughout Allie's childhood.
  • Version number will indicate Allie's age when content ends, rather than % of completion.

I really like this game. I really hope this project gets abandoned like most of the games on this site.

I wish people would keep in mind that the creater of the game indicated that he is laying out the foundation of the game and the choices do not really diverge at this point.  As the MC ages, the choices will eventually mean something but other than number stats, it won't really impact the story as of yet.

Please keep up the good work, Green!

There;s no real difference no matter what you choose, the story has one path, nanes of characters, and locations may change in minor deviations, but the main events are essentially the same, and all end up down the same one track path,

Whether you embrace being a girl, or fight it all the way, makes no difference to the outcome at all, it may as well be a novel, because that;s how iy reads, your choices have no real effect.

Havingh said that, the story is well written, just far to linear to make any the choices natter, but is clearly leaning in the accepting girlhood direction, and it's particularly jarring when the choices made are in the opposite direction,

It's a work in progress, with potenyial, and could get fleshed out. So I'll keep watching formore divergent paths, where choices make a real difference to the outcome.
