I don't like or really understand how the main character's tg is going to be a completely seperate game. I don't really like the games where it's your friend that the curse gets put on so I guess for people like me, we have to wait way way longer. But this story is still pretty good despite not being my personal preference. I'll still play it when things get released for free because of the good plot but other than that, this is my only complaint and this game is pretty good.
I usually dont like this game engine or its CYOA feel to it. However, everything about this so far exceeds expetations that it makes it worth it. Very well done artwork, story, and dialog. The current update (i havent tried this for some time) adds soo much, even if pieces have yet to be illustrated.
I do hope at some point theres an option to allow your roomate to get impregnated and remain as she is, without being an game over. It builds toward this so many times it feels like a let-down.
The little splash screen on the game's page says 'This is not a porn game, it's a visual novel with porn in it.' It's true, but it's a weird flag to plant on this game. To sum up the background: Your best friend tried to rape a witch, who bit him. And now he's turning into a woman. You agree to go on three dates with the witch in exchange for turning him back. Also there's a blonde woman with large breasts and some kind of dream spirit but I didn't get much about them on my playthroughs. The game is set in Barcelona, though I never felt like the setting differed from my own here in the U.S.
Our three main women have very different designs with bodies that reflect their personalities and lifestyles. They have multiple expressions, sizes, and even a few simple animations. The main character is less expressive. The few times he's on screen I got the impression he was placeholder art with a comically long dick. Thankfully, the rest of the game's art is well done so viewing of backgrounds and locales is easy.
In narrative terms, which is really where visual novels live and die, the story is interesting. The main character's situation is complex. His best friend's body has been violated, but it got that way because he was trying to violate someone else. The witch clearly has an attraction to you (possibly because you saved her), but she's obviously dangerous and possibly unbalanced. At the same time your friend's new form is generating new feelings s/he's not prepared to deal with. If there's an akward aspect, it's the blonde third character whose presence is mysterious and kind of hostile. She's a lot of work, and gives you very little reason to take interest in her. Some of the dialogue needs refinement, as well. An example that was brought up elsewhere is the MC's description of an ideal woman. Here the MC states his desired qualities line by line. It drags. I'd rather be given a list of options and shown how the witch responds to my choice. This is an interesting story, I'd like to have more influence on it.
At this point the game develops a conflict with its goal of 'not being a porn game'. For one, it uses many porn game staples. One character walks around barely covered. Another is described as 'big boobs'. Many of the key scenes have a sexual aspect to them. There's even a meter up top measuring affection for the MC. While this is useful for figuring out what the 'right' answer to their questions is, it also turns conversation into a quiz show where roleplay is discouraged.
The game's tone shifts rapidly back and forth from comical, creepy, sad, and kind of grumpy. Each in turn isn't necessarily a bad thing. Different people find different things erotic. But the diversity of tone never quite gels into its own thing, and claim of 'visual novel first, porn second' is a little undercut by the porn mini-game.
I don't think I've ever recommended this in any review, but I'd rather see this game without the porn. I just think the story would flow better if it weren't wedging in sexual acts. It's more limiting than it should be. The problem with trying to develop a product with porn that isn't about porn is this: Pornography doesn't serve narrative purpose. Sex is part of a story. Rape is part of a story. Orgies are part of a story. But porn is the explicit description or illustration of these story elements. Verbally, this slows the narrative down. Visually, it causes the eye to linger and delay.
In 'Pact with a Witch' you are either seeing an interesting story with baffling moments of explicit sex or a porn game that takes forever to get to the action. It really needs to lean harder one way or the other.
The game is fine, but the writing is a bit clunky at times. You're expected to make the weirdest decisions for the game to progress, some passages last for waaaay too long (like when the MC describes his dream woman... for maybe some 20 text boxes) and it shoves in literary and generally Spanish/Barcelona references without real care about whether they benefit the story; the horrendously long passage I mentioned above is quoted from a Spanish writer... for some reason. During my playthrough I didn't get to any "hot stuff", so I can't speak for the quality of the writing there.
You're doing a great job on the game. The art and story is really well executed so far.
That said, I understand the desire to promote your game, but claiming it's an update when you add the ability to select a choice without anything actually happening after is going to turn away those who are interested in the game. Personally, I'll check back next year and see what progress has been made.
