Nightshift

Have questions or comments?
Discuss at the TFGames Thread or one of the Discords (6six6's / Icarue's) for our projects

Nightshift is a game with visual novel and card game style elements. Seeing the story from a unique perspective, the story branches across many different possibilities. As you go, play out a variety of games based on the "Triple Triad" card game with a variety of cards to collect. The night is yours, so what will be your fate? Will be be benign? Or maybe fantastical?

The planned scope being...

  • 18 unique endings with unique art across them and the planned epilogue, each distinctly varying in TF themes involved.
  • 6 nights of Triple Triad matches that vary as the story branches
  • 45 cards to collect across the story and booster pack system.

This is meant to be a shorter project relative to what we normally do, so a lot of it has been decided, but we are always open to feedback both positive and negative. Please do provide where and when you can if you feel the desire to share! We hope you enjoy your time with the game.

Update v1.0

It took a second, but Nightshift has hit that v1.0! For those of your following along, the only thing left to do was bug fixing and releasing for other platforms (I might be still procrastinating on figuring out Linux builds with RPGM MZ, thought). But with this release, we now have a new Mac version... and a **In browser version playable over at itch.io**. That one should hopefully allow Linux players to play until I can motivate myself to actually understand Linux, at least. For now I'll leave it at that. Hope those that haven't played yet can enjoy!

Changelog:

- Mac and Browser based versions available

- Minor Bug fixes

(We're still hoping to do a Linux build in the future)

Played through this game over the course of an evening (this evening, in fact!). Will try to keep spoilers rather light in this brief review. It was a charming little VN. There are adult themes and (very sparse) imagery, but I would be hard pressed to call this game titilating. If you're looking for sexy material to get off to (no shame in that!), I'd stay that there's probably other games on this site that are much better suited to it.

I'd say it took me about four hours to get through all 18 endings, so I think the length is just fine---all I wanted this evening was to read a good story, and that's what I got here. Not counting the time it takes to do the Triple Triad matches, I think you can get an ending starting from the beginning in 15-25 minutes, assuming you're not just rushing through everything. Every choice leads to a different ending, which is nice---no branches looping back into a main route here! I found our leads to be charming, and I think they had pretty good chemistry. Getting all endings isn't as tedious as it could've been due to the option to "rewind" the story upon an ending being reached. QoL features like that are very much appreciated!

The music is sparse but fitting where it shows up. No real complaints here.

Admitedly, I did not engage much with the Triple Triad aspect to this, but it worked well enough for what it was; though, the UI felt a little clunky at times. I don't feel comfortable commenting further than that given that I played a grand total of maybe 10 matches in my ~20-25 loops of the game (Getting certain endings multiple times often happens if you don't have a guide for these types of games).

The art is fine, and I found the chibi portraits of the main characters cute. I wish there was more art in general, but that's the case with most VNs I play anyway! And I realize that CGs and portraits take a lot of time (and/or money) to produce, so I'm not holding it against a game I got for free!

Grammatical and spelling errors as well as stilted dialogue can take me right out of an experience, so I was pleased to find that none of those were the case here.

Main critique I have of this game is that navigating without a mouse can feel a little clunky at times if you're using the arrow keys or a D-pad to select items on your desk, and I often found myself wishing I could speed up some of the asides (would you call those "gab" textboxes? The ones that aren't part of the normal RPG Maker Dialogue system, anyway). The curse of being a fast reader! While you can skip through them somewhat with the fast forward option, that sometimes meant accidentally skipping through some normal dialogue I wanted to read (thank goodness for the message log). I kinda wish some of the pauses in the text were shortened, but that's just a taste thing.

Overall, I enjoyed my time with the game and don't regret it one bit. Apologies to any readers if this review is a bit disorganized and/or bad---I don't write these often, and I more or less just started firing off whatever came to mind right after finishing this cute little game.

Well this is something fresh for this site.

Personally, I don't really like the game ('m really bad), but thanks to the skip option I can still enjoy the story.
I find the story really good, I really enjoyed trying all the paths avaliable and I'm satisfied.

can't wait to find out how the story evolves.
