Do It for the Band Man!

The game is about a a young guy who makes a deal to achieve his dreams of being a musician, but gets a lot more than he bargained for.  You'll manage your daily life as you struggle to make it as a musician in the big city. But be careful as various elements attempt to steer you off the path of your dreams

This game is still very early in development so there are a good bit of placeholder elements, bugs, typos, and incomplete features.  This is a rather ambitious project I'm undertaking so I ask that you be patient as develoment happens.

0.3.7 (First update by brandi to ensure it works)

-Added a television you can buy and watch in your apartment

-Fixed the makeup auto-apply bug and rent overdue looping bug

0.3.6

Hotfix for the alarm clock sleep bug.

0.3.5 Changelog

***OLD SAVES WILL NOT WORK AND WILL LIKELY BREAK YOUR GAME***

This update mostly focuses a lot on cleaning up annoyances and making the world feel a tad more "alive."  I would have liked to expand the main story but I just haven't had time lately.

This release has some very incomplete features. Especially the random dating system and barista jobs.  Much is placeholder outside the coffee shop date.  These will be a lot more feleshed out in the weeks to come.

Not so much a walkthrough but some tips.

If you're having trouble keeping your happiness up, try relaxing in the park, exercising, visiting the Live House, or smoking. Also working a high stress job like the waitress one too often every day is a sure way to make Claire sad very quickly. (Alcohol will also increase happiness next version)

If you like to explore try to avoid doing it at night, and you should keep a can of pepper spray handy.  It is the big city after all.

If you find it tedious combing your hair and doing your makeup every morning, feel free to auto-apply it from the settings menu.

Leaving the Live House totally wasted can have the unfortunate side effect of attracting unwanted attention.

Game is in early development and likely old saves won't work correctly.

0.3.7 (First update by brandi to ensure it works)

  • Added some of the other fixes from Agnostic (thanks for file)
  • Added a television you can buy and watch in your apartment
  • Fixed the makeup auto-apply bug
  • Fixed the rent overdue looping bug

0.3.6

Hotfix for sleep bug where the alarm clock being enabled would sometimes cause the days not to move to the next.

0.3.5

  • -Alarm Clock Function added along with the boatload of changes to support it.
  • -You can now nap in your bedroom. (novel concept...right?)
  • New stores added to the mall. New stuff too.
  • Initial release of NPC dating system added. This is somewhat unfinished.
  • Gender transformation now based off of power rather than corruption.
  • Adjustments and new events have been added to existing jobs to give more chances to use your influence power and further your transformation...if you chose to.
  • Keeping your apartment clean got a whole lot easier.
  • Pay for working should finally be more normalized so that you make money at a decent rate regardless of RNG elements.
  • Early and unfinsihed phone system added. You'll find all the old settings and stuff inside. It's pretty rough right now but I'll get around to making it prettier later on. For now it's perfectly functional.
  • The left menu bar will auto update itself.
  • Cleaned up and made inventory window a lot better and prettier. You can hover over the boxes to find out what each item does. (Let me know if this isn't working in your browser, only tested on chromium.
  • Therapist is now open in Manhattan offering services that will allow players to lower corruption and increase happiness. And maybe increaase your power?
  • If your lust starts getting too high, you may start masturbating in your apartment. And it's possible your roomates could catch you in the act.
  • Improvements to apartment bathroom that should help reduce a lot of clicking.
  • Framework for Barista job added.
  • Some placeholder-ish random pickup dating system added with events. (Not finished)
  • Lots of other undocumented stuff...lost track of some changes when I took a long needed break from game dev.

Changelog v0.2.1

  • Baths/Showers now use and track bodywash and shampoo.
  • You can chose to brush your hair from the makeup screen for a little more ease.
  • Piercings actually work this time.
  • Give-up game overs properly trigger.
  • Bronx exploration is disabled. It shouldn't have been enabled in the first place.
  • Fixed a scripting error between the acts at the Live House.
  • Music Store should no longer be able to double populate your Queens location menu.
  • No more free teleports from Manhattan to Queens by leaving the Taxi stand.
  • Corrected a scripting error with the audtions.
  • You shouldn't get stuck on the Bronx subway anymore.
  • Eddie cleaning dialogue now has proper success and fail passages.
  • Music should now correctly play though drink ordering.
  • Fixed Erick and Eddie to cleaning array, for reals this time.
  • Uped the base pay of the music store job.
  • Manhattan Taxis actually take you to the location you requested now, instead of just stealing your money.
  • Writing lyrics to Erick's song should trigger properly.
  • Practicing the new song with the band actually increases happiness rather than setting it to a flat value.

Changelog v0.2

Fixes/Changes

  • Lots of bug fixes all around, honestly too many to count.
  • Task list added.  This will get more sophisticated in the future.
  • Content goes up to just before the second audition now.
  • Lots of placeholders in queens now have text.
  • More clothing items added.
  • Tatoos and piercings is a bit more fleshed out.
  • Suicide game overs diabled by default. You can enable them in the settings.

1st off, I like the game.   I like the games where you have to live and survive and build up your skills etc...

I really liked the beginning the prolog and then the 'magical' part happened and I was thinking I really liked this game up till now.  Only because the prolog is written really well and no hint of magic.  However, I played on and once you are into the city, it has a lot of potential.

I hope to see updates. I would not nitpic about things like the description as it's early on in the game.  Lots of potential!

I loved the premise of the game. It might not be revolutionary with player character being forcefully transformed at the beginning of the game, but it's a solid fonudation for a game. And the reason for the change is something original the game introduces that could be an interesting change.

However... The game is unplayable. I really don't know how to put it nicely, so I'm just gonna be blunt: It's 95% grind and 5% content. For example, to go from your apartment in Queens to Manhattan you need to 1) go outside, 2) head to subway, 3) enter subway, 4) choose Manhattan, and 5) confirm random filler event. Oh, and guess where's recording studio you'll need to often visit is located. The game has other red flags as well such us having to go to convinience store to buy toiletries, going to bathroom to shower in the morning etc. In fact, the first thing you do once you leave prologue is to Look For Job, right? Lol, nope, you silly goose. You have to first go outside, check the news stand, get back to the street level and then go back to your apartment. I guess Do It for the Band Man! universe does not have cellphones...

Another annoying aspect is balance of the game. Playing it would give you an impression that people get mugged at gunpoint multiple times a day in New York. Why would anyone live there? And what's worst, the mugger always takes all your money off you. In many life simulation games credit cards either don't exist or are introduced just to include additional grind to the game. DIftBM! is no exception. The tenth time you are mugged you wish you enabled suicide bad ending at the start of the game so that your character would finally commit suicide to free you of the misery of grinding the game.

For a minor complain, I wish game developers stopped including placeholder locations. When you explore Manhattan you can discover variosu landmarks such as Statue of Liberty or Broadwae. But all you get is a placeholder screen with no content. Those only serve to annoy the player and clutter the interface.

Having wrote all that, I believe this game has potential and there are chances that authors don't intend for it to be full of grind. While at the moment there is no auto-shower-in-the-morning option, it has automatically apply makeup and automatically brush hair options. It also has a "Go to Work" option right in your apartment so you don't have to navigate the city each day. It just need smore of those shortcuts, removal of some of the grindy elements and rebalance of the mugging. For example, add "Shower each Morning" option alongside with option to automatically apply makeup, brush hair, shave etc. Either assusme infinite supply of toiletries (so there's no need to go to convenience store to buy them) or add an option to auto buy them when they run out. Get rid of subway and taxi systems (they add nothing to the story or gameplay) and just list all the available locations on single screen. Dramatically reduce probability of mugging and cap how much they can steal.

This still could be a good game, but at the moment it's sadly unplayable.

Played version 0.2.1, and it looks like the development started all over in between.

There are some improvements in game mechanics(except for the obvious bugs), but most of the story is gone.

Once the prolog is over, MC has transformed to a girl for all practical purposes outside the bathroom.

It looks like the game is a pretty good base to build a story, with events endangering the facade, and a MC on a scary path to a life as a pop star (or a devil's slave...)
